Through their respective Deeds of Settlement with the Crown, Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, Ngāruahine, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Tama, Taranaki Iwi and Te Atiawa settled their Historical Treaty of Waitangi Claims and agreed to collectively negotiate cultural redress in relation to

Taranaki Maunga.

Since signing Terms of Negotiation on 17 March 2017, negotiations on cultural redress arrangements in relation to Taranaki Maunga by Ngā Iwi o Taranaki continued until the initialling of the Taranaki Maunga Collective Redress Deed - Te Ruruku Pūtakerongo - on Friday 31st March 2023.

This signified the end of formal negotiations.

A ratification period followed from 7 July 2023 to 7 August 2023 to empower Ngā Iwi o Taranaki members to vote on the redress package.   During this period, a series of ratification hui was held to provide information to enable discussion of the proposed redress and the collective iwi governance arrangements. Ngā Iwi o Taranaki members were asked to vote on the following resolution:

I agree that the collective redress deed Te Ruruku Pūtakerongo (which includes the establishment of a collective iwi governance entity Te Tōpuni Ngārahu) be accepted

Voting was complete on Wednesday 16th August 2023 and successfully ratified.  An official signing ceremony will take place Friday 1 September 2023 and the legislative process begins.
